DeVille became even more convivial than usual. He had already waxed lyrical on the different sounds and effects of various church and chapel organs and harmoniums. This was a subject he was expert on since childhood. Whilst his father, a peripatetic organist, played the hymn tunes and the congregation sang loudly and enthusiastically, but always lagging behind, the boy DeVille would be engaged in supplying sufficient pressure of air to the acoustic instrument by way of whatever bellows, pedals, or pumps were provided for that particular purpose.
